Default oil pump problem

so i finally got the car back together and i ended up having no oil pressure. i switched gauges to make sure but i didnt want to run the car to long. i took the distributer off and i relized the hexagon rod is dropped into the bottom of the engine. my question is can this happen by taking off the distributer or does the oil pump have to come loose?

this happens when you forget to install the little ring that slides on the shaft to keep the shaft from coming out when you pull the dizzy up..if this pieces position is not checked after installing oil pump then what happened to you can happen.....it has to be positioned just right or the shaft will fall out when pulling dizzy out if shaft sticks in the bottom of the dizzy like it often does for a sec

If the retainer clip is not set properly or not present then it can happen. The purpose of the clip is to prevent the driveshaft from coming out of the pump when the dizzy is pulled. Time to go fishing.

Time to go fishing.
This is a long shot.
He will probably have to jack up the engine and lower the pan.
This is what I had to do when my shaft snapped it two. [:'(]

if your lucky.. you may be able to get a large magnet and try and drag the shaft across the pan to the front drain plug opening... but it's a good chance you'll have to drop the pan down a little and fish it out with a magnet!!! this is where that one piece reusable rubber pan gasket that if you ever had to replace a pan gasket is the one you used..hopefully[:@]??? will come in handy

If you can see it why don't you get one of those telescopic magnets and take it out?

alright well i tried to get it out through the dizzy hole but it dropped off the magnet and fell somewhere. i drained the oil and unbolted the pan but when i shake the pan it doesnt seem like nything is in there, there is no sound at all, is there anywhere else the rod could have gone?
