when it is running try wiggling the wires to see if it does it...plus your ignition module could be the culprit too???magnetic pick up too???

Theres no module, this **** is set up mad old school. i have wiring diagrams. I have a wire from my switch to the ballast resistor, then from the resistor to the coil, then from the coil to the distributor.

If it's truly set up "old school" you should be suspect of the condenser and the coil. Either of these can break down when hot and then get better after cooling off. I would suspect the condenser first. Most of the ones out there today are made in some third world asian country, and the quality control is not always great.

Also, regarding the guage of the wire, it it is not written on the outter casing, you can tell by opening it up and looking at the diameter (remember a higher number guage is a smaller wire, i.e. a 22 guage is much smaller than a 10 guage. Most ignition wiring is going to be 14 to 18 guage. You can go with a larger wire (smaller guage) with no problem (other than increased stiffness when working with the wire), but not the other way around.

I just looked at my coil and its corroded on the inside and on the metal piece the connects to the spark plug wire. Im suspecting that its not giving my distributor full juice and in turn running hotter and breaking down?

try bypassing the ballast resistor and see if the problem goes away. if it does, then you need a new resistor. don't run without the resistor as a normal thing as this raises the voltage to the points and will burn them up much faster than normal.

I was told by my mechanic that if the resistor was bad then it wouldnt run at all, but im going to give that a try. I was just testing it out and the car will run for a lil bit and shut off which is why i keep thinking it is my coil heating up and breaking down.
