Anybody who has ever had starting problems...advice
Today is the second time my car has done this. I have a 5spd. I turn the key to crank and "click". No turning of the engine. I pull the key back and try to crank it again...."click". Just one solid click.
The battery is fine. The lights do no dim when trying to crank. I tried looking for the starter cylinoid and found what I thought it was it. Is it behind the battery mounted to the fender. Under a black ABS plastic cover?
I tried tapping that several times and nothing. I even tried shorting (touching) the two terminals together and still nothing.
Could it be the starter? Or is the cylinoid shot?
If the starter is shot then what are some good brands out there. I would look for a high-torque (for future engine mods) starter that is not an arm and a leg.
Thanks

I had to replace the starter in my 87 sentra and 93 mustang around the same time (two different problems). My sentra also would just click, but it would do it repeatedly (10-50x) then it would turn over fine. Replaced the starter on that and it worked almost perfect (my battery was shot too). Apparently the selonoid (what is the correct way to spell this?) was dead.
And for curiosity's sake, my mustangs starter was dying and throwing sparks when it turned over.
As for brands, it shouldn't really matter, just get the new or remanufactured one ($10 less or something) and get the lifetime warrenty and then you are set.

After I start my 5.0 it makes like a metal screach, not like a lose belt, like a metal on metal noise, sort of hollow tinny noise. Now recently it started making a new noise like if you put a marbel in a can and spun it around, it makes tha tsound for about 5 secs after I start it up now. Any ideas?

Pure5.0 how are your battery cables and terminals? Any corrosion or wires showing on the cables?
Aliate X, sounds like your starter is going out or needs to be shimmed. The metal to metal screech is the teeth on the started not fully meshing with the flywheel, which best case it killed the teeth on the starter, worse case it kills teeth on the flywheel and you gotta replace it. As far as marble sound, could be the bearings on the starter.
