anyone with a black magic or proam fan... i got a question
for anyone running a black magic or pro am electric fan on their 5.0, do you have to get a higher amp alt. or can you still run the stock one without any low charging? i know for the volvo fans you need a higher amp alternator. i tried, but couldn't find any posts about upgrading alt. with the black magic or pro am.

the stock alt. is barely enough for the cars as is. so any electric fan will need a 130amp alt. also go to the local junkyards the fan off a 90-95 3.8liter taurus will flow more air than proform or black majic and they can be bought for 20-30bucks.

I got a proform fan installed in my 86GT. It drew alot from the alt. So I installed a 130 amp alt and it does great. The alt upgrade is well worth the effort, no more dim headlights. The fan works good too, just a little louder than I wanted.

I didn't have to upgrade the alternator when I installed the Black Magic fan on my '88, but I wasn't running a big stereo and stuff with it either. why not try it first and then upgrade only if you find you have to do so.

thanks roundman, i was thinking of doing that. my stereo system is pretty simple, just an aftermarket head unit and cheap pioneer speakers. stock sizes, no subs or anything to draw excessive power. i'll see how things go with the fan and stock alternator, hopefully i have the same luck as you.

i just bought the proform and it it installed it fits perfect and has the adjustable therm and it's like 75 bucks cheaper than the black magic, i haven't seen how much juice it drains though i'm replaceing the lower intake gaskets before i can hit the road. but i had an electric fan prior to this and it ran constantly and i have underdrive pulleys, didn't have any problems with the voltage so can't imagine it should be an issue. but i'll be able to let you know for sure by tomorrow

yeah, they are cheaper than the black magic fans, with the same features. like the adjustable thermostat, as you said. i was going to get a volvo fan like dbeck and some other people on the forum have, but i found a proform fan on ebay for $80 brand new. i thought it was a pretty good deal.
