My transmission is a 5 speed manual. 1989 ford mustang LX. Transmission grinds into reverse 50 percent of time even with clutch fully engaged and going slowly. Is my synchro going bad or is there some other possible explanation?

I have a 91 Gt and the same issue. Try starting in 5th gear first or shut off car and then put it in reverse and start. I have been reading and found this is a know issue.

I would love to have this corrected myself.

My Toploader is unsynchronized reverse, just put in the clutch, put in in first to synchronize it, and keeping the clutch in, then shift into reverse. That's provided your 1st synchro works though.

All other gears work fine. I will try those tipstomorrow morning! Thanks for the help guys.

Where does your clutch grab at?
If it is rite off the floor it may not be fully releasing when you push it in.

I always put it in 5th before reverse

reverse doesnt have a syncro gear so that way when ur slammin 3-4 or 5-4 and u go into reverse by accident...its grinds, thus saving you and your transmission. if it had a syncro gear and you made that mistake....goodbye tranny

my ride does the same thing just put it in 5th the reverse and no grindage

Same here, although I use third or fourth gear instead of fifth, and my wife also uses fourth when she drives the car. Any forward gear will work though. Even though some say their trannies don't grind into fifth, I think T5s and other transmissions are supposed to do this.

reverse is non syncronized often for saftey reasons and before going into reverse I often tap it to 1st..quick easy solution
