Default H/C/I kit or build your own?

When doing the H/C/I swap would you guys rather use a kit like the ones offered by Trick Flow and Edelbrock or would you like to piece everything together? Does it actually work out to be cheaper to buy the kit or to build the kit yourself?

You're saying like mixing and matching? Edelbrock heads, Trick Flow intake, and a ford cam for example? Just basically using the best of everything? My question is how will you know for sure that a specific cam from lets say ford will work well with heads from Trick Flow?

i mean like if your trying to get the most of your set up

ex.

306
11.1 cr
canfield 195
custom cam
and say trickflow track/holley systemmax
75mm tb
pmas/pro mass air

for the basic builders the "kits" arent a bad idea. there is no guess work you bolt it on and go

i like different parts , i love the gt40 tubular intake , i don't care if something might flow a bit better, it is the only intake i will EVER use.

i would go w/ aluminum gt40's to compliment , but i chose edelbrock instead.

you have much more freedom to custom tailor your app when you pick it.

too many variables to get a system from the man's

do you live where it's hotter ? might not want too much compression
do you spray ? have a blower ?
daily driver ? dd but don't care about rough idle cuz it's worth it since you go to the track almost every weekend ?

see what i mean, just too much

the cost off piecing together your own kit is close to that of a pre assembled kit only the do it yourself kit often will yield more power if the right components are matched

those kits are good if you just want to get the basic deal. I mean they have everything in there, so its quite convenient. However, if you just read around this forum, you can see that everyone is using different combos, so just read up on what you're looking for, and piece it together for yourself. Post on what you're thinking about getting and people will tell you how they think it will work, or what to get thats better. I can say that i've learned tons on this site, and its how i built my set up. I was looking for an economic build, and these guys helped me out a lot.

build your own; you'll feel accomplished.

Default RE: H/C/I kit or build your own?

I have an 02 gt right now but an getting rid of it real soon for 10 grand cash and a 4cly notch. I have a brand new 302 truck block sitting around with a brand new bottom end. I want the car to be a weekend car with plenty of power. It will see the track but mostly just a street car to show the punks around town what 5 grand cash can do to a mustang. I was just seeing if it would be worth it to piece together a top end or just buy a kit. From the sounds of itbuilding it would be better. Here is my next question.Since there is no efi for the 5.0 in the car already should I just go carburated? And how to I go about getting a custom ground cam?

Building your own to get more power is likely to cost you more.

Take the Trickflow kit for example, with the parts included. You may be able to go without a couple pieces.

Trickflow H/C/I Combinations:

Street Heat Kits for $2,450:

TFS-K514-350-370 - Street Heat Intake/Street Heat Heads (smog provisions).
TFS-K514-350-370B – Street Heat Intake/Street Heat Heads, Black Upper Intake and Black Valve Covers (smog provisions).

That kit includes:

TFS-51402000 - Stage 1 Cam
TFS-51400510 - 1.6 Ratio, 3/8" Stud, Set of 16
TFS-21406700 - Pushrod Set of 16 -6.700â€
TFS-51400904 - Head Gasket Set
TFS-51400801 - Cast Valve Covers or TFS-51411801 for Black.
TFS-51400004 - Twisted Wedge/Street Heads, Assembled (Kit has Single Valve Spring)
TFS-51500001 - 5.0L Street Heat EFI Intake Manifold
ARP-154-3601 - ARP Head Bolt Kit
TFS-51400800 - Oil Fill Kit
TFS-51478520 - Billet Timing Chain Set
FEL-TCS45449 - Fel-Pro Timing Cover Gasket Kit

Track Heat Kits for $2,500:

TFS-K514-360-350 – Track Heat Intake/Track Heat Heads (no smog provisions).
TFS-K514-360350B – Track Heat Intake/Track Heat Heads, Black Upper Intake and Black Valve Covers (no smog provisions).

TFS-51402000 - Stage 1 Cam
TFS-51400510 - 1.6 Ratio, 3/8" Stud, Set of 16, ask for 7/16†stud if wanted.
TFS-21406700 - Pushrod Set of 16 -6.700â€
TFS-51400904 - Head Gasket Set
TFS-51400801 - Cast Valve Covers or TFS-51411801 for Black.
TFS-51400004 - Twisted Wedge/Street Heads, ask for track heat head upgrade confirmation.
TFS-51500001 - 5.0L Track Heat EFI Intake Manifold
ARP-154-3601 - ARP Head Bolt Kit
TFS-51400800 - Oil Fill Kit
TFS-51478520 - Billet Timing Chain Set
FEL-TCS45449 - Fel-Pro Timing Cover Gasket Kit

Extra Notes:
The street heat intake has 15 inch runners and the track heat intake has 12 inch runners.

The street heat heads come with smog provisions and the track heat does not. The track heat heads can be ported a bit more because of this.

Both the street heat and track heat heads come with 3/8†rocker studs and the track heat heads can be upgraded to thicker 7/16†rocker studs. Just call your sales representative to get the upgrade.

Both street heat and track heat versions have the option to come with dual valve springs and 10* locks.

Twisted Wedge and Street Heat Heads are the same, not to be confused with Track Heat.

The trickflow h/c/i packages are more designed for the fox-body cars do to valve cover tallness and throttle body adapter plate not being included.

If I was to build my own, I know which way I would go, as I have did it withLOTS of research:

Stock bottomend:

- AFR 165cc
- FTI custom camshaft (www.flowtechinduction.com)
- Porter Performer intake or similar
- 24-30 lb injectors
- 80mm MAF
- 70mm throttle body (your engine is NOT going to need anymore than that)
- 1.625" longtubes
