Default Front Shock Top Side Nut

I'm replacing my stock front shocks on my'90and I'm trying to remove the nut on the top side tower. What's the best way to get this off. So far i've soaked it with penetrating goop, then used a boxed end wrench and a pry bar like screwdriver. Is there a specialty socket or trick to do this? On my '96 I was just able to hold the screw driver and wrench it out but this one is on there good. Thanks in advance

The strut nut is a PITA to remove with just using hand tools. An impact wrench is your best friend when it comes to taking this nut off. Or you could have a service station break it loose for you, and then drive it back home.

I can spin the nut, but when I do that the internal shaft spins with it. With the impact wrench, is nut for lack of a better term "outspinning" the internal shaft.

Yes, it is "outspinning" it, plus the impacting action helps alot. I've never had any problems

Put a pair of vice grips on the shaft as tight as possible and then slowly hit the impact until it finally breaks.

you should be shot!

do not put vice grips on the shaft of the shock UNLESS you use a piece of rubber hose to keep the jaws from digging in and DESTROYING the shock

Since you are replacing the strut, do the vice grip trick and you will be fine.

Exactly, he is replacing the shock so the vice grips would be just fine. Now if you have the same problem when trying to tighten the nut then you have to try another idea.
