Rear Main Seal

RE: Rear Main Seal
Exactly what round man said, check the valve covers. Mine were leaking real bad and from under the car it looked like a rear main seal. In fact I had 3 mechanics tell me it was the rear main seal, But looking up the side of the motor I could clearly see where the oil originated. I used laquer thinner in a spray bottle to clean it off the block so I could see fresh oil leaking down the next day. Laquer thinner rocks for cleaning an engine, it really doesn't take the paint off if you don't get carried away in one spot, and eats oil like mad, and it dries with no residue. I use an armor-all spray bottle as the stream is more powerful than regular spray bottles.

If someone mentioned about raising the engine they are probably thinking about the old style split rm seal that was changed by removing the oil pan, bearing caps....etc. A real PITA. The new style one piece seals work better and are easier to change IMO. Removing the tranny is no big deal just labor intensive. Obviously, you would change the clutch components at the same time...at least I would.

So is an 83 considered an old style? I just had my clutch replaced as well as my fly wheel resurfaced, and also have a oil leak which appears to be a rear main seal but the mechanic said he'd have to lift the engineto do it so i said forget it, for now??????
