Default SMOKING, PISTON RINGS?

Well fellas I started pulling out the engine at 9:00am and its 3:20 and i have it out and pulled the heads out it looks clean, I was suspecting a bad head gasket but it looks good too. The problem was it was smoking looked like oil smoke, anyways is there a way to check the rings?should i just tell the machine shop to change them anyways along with a high volume oil pump.

You could have ran a cylinder leak down test before you tore the heads off. As far as your oil pump, I've read on here a few times just to go with an original replacement type, as far as the high volume bit goes.

id look at valve seals 1st... then rings, but thats just me

and yea aperantly there can be an oiling loss at high rpm from it running the pan dry... dont know any truth to that at all though

Basically they say you need a deeper sump pan to run a high volume pump

It depends. An HV pump is capable of moving more oil, but won't move more than the bearing clearances will allow. That said, at higher rpm the centrifugal force throws oil from the rod bearings and lets the pump flow a bit more. If you have poor oil return in the heads you could start to run dry, or a stock volume pan, you might move oil out faster than it can return. That said, there are people running HV's on stock volume pans. I have an HV but the pan is bigger than stock. Canton makes a good pan for a decent price that's a baffled pan.

I forgot to mention the valve seals were new, I put the trickflow spring retainer seal kit on it. The pistons are clean so are the walls and you can still see the crisscross patterns on it. Anyways im going to take the shortblock and heads to the machine shop tommorow, well see what needs to be done for sure.
