Default Oil pump?

Ok ive been rebuilding my motor and got it in the car and everything thing on it. when i tried to put in the distributor it wouldnt go all the way down. when i looked down the hole i saw that the oil pump driveshaft was stuck on the side of the block instead of being in the middle. i tried prying it off the block but it jus went back to the same position. so what did i do wrong and how do i fix it?
Thanks

the shaft should center itself...your problem is most likely that the shaft isn't lined up with the hex drive on the bottom of the dizzy...get a 1/4 drive on a long extention and a 1/4 socket and rotate the shaft a little until you get the dizzy to seat...it may take a few tries

Yeah, you're having to line up the hex drive with the dizzy as well as the gears on the dizzy and cam. It can be a pain sometimes.

Yea, I had some fun the other day when I was setting my timing, it would go on a tooth before and a tooth after very easy but it took a little to get it to go where I wanted it cause it would drop all the way down. But it did eventualy slide in just fine.

I got so tired of that shi happening, I just installed the shaft onto the oil pump with a dab of RTV adhesive to keep it in place.

And where the shaft goes in the distributor, I gave a light sand to keep it from sticking to the dizzy when pulled out.

I usually just bump the engine over and it drops right in.

After I found out that mine didnt have the shaft in it my brother and I didn't want to deal with pulling the pan to install it correctly so to keep it from falling into the pan when we pull the dizzy we just expoxied the shaft into the dizzy.
