afr 165's will clear stock pistons the diameter of a 2.02 valve will cause interference unless you use a trick flow twisted wedge head with a canted valve set up.....anything bigger than a 1.94 or 1.90 valve on the intake side will cause probs...google it

I helped a guy put AFR185s on a stock short block with a Trick Fow stage 1 cam. We clayed the pistons and the intake was at the limit to be safe but it worked. In my opinion that cam was to small to take advantage of that size head but he was running a blower so that helped pump the cylinders full. What are your goals, if you are going to stay 302ci I would just go with the 165s.

Yep, it is the camshaft that is going to be the big factor.

Yeah they say you'll have to notch the pistons with the AFR 185s because usually you'll want to run a cam with much more than .499 lift to make optimal use of the 185 heads. Depending on your plans the AFR 165s could be just fine, the flow isn't majorly different between the two.

It is not the lift that causes piston to valve clearance issues.

Why would the valve need to be opened up to its peak when the piston is at TDC? There is no "gap" to fill.
