Default transmission slip/ wont engage

i have an 89 5.0L with an AOD trans.
the other day, it would drive fine, accelerate normally, but i got in it today and it would shift into second gear at about 2500 rpm no matter what then when it hits overdrive, it seems to have shifted into neutral. if i shift it into drive, it will go fine but as soon as it hits overdrive, i have no acceleration, but i can maintain the speed i was going at before the shift.
anyone know what could have happened?

i checked the differential case and internals, but next i am going to take the transmission apart and check it.

At the throttle body where the accelerator cable hooks to it your TV cable should hook there also. There is a bushing the TV cable is in, if that is broken then it is going to burn up your OD clutches. If that bushing is gone go ahead and pull the transmission out and make sure and get another bushing.

I would change the fluid and filter before you tear it apart.
