On my cousins mustang.. 1990 gt 5spd.. The tps sensor was causing the car to idle at 3k rpms sometimes..so we unplugged it and its perfect...now 8 months later we buy a new sensor and install it and it does the same thing..so we unplug it again and now its fine again, but im trying to figure out what else it could be. thanks in advance!!

Disconnect battery for 15 minutes, in the meantime, reconnect the TPS, then, reconnect battery, start engine and test drive for 5-15 minutes (even with the problem)...... shut it down, run the DIY KOEO/KOER/Cylinder Balance Self-Test and LUK what shows up in terms of failure codes. Don't gue$$..... verify what the EEC system is working with.

you need to adjust the screws on the tps and check with a volt meter, position it to i believe......closest to 1 volt. i believe, doo some research and check, i can't exactly remember, but if thats way off, that will effect idle.

TPS voltage should be around .98

That is a mythological solution that will not solve anything.... as long as the TPS closed throttle value is within .5 - 1.19 vdc (.7 - 1.0 vdc optimum)... the system will work fine. The system has a computer with a logic programmed ... use it.

Nope.... BTW.... TPS holding screws are not phillips head screws.... they are pozidrive #2 (very similar to phillips)..... reason why they are a little hard to loosen, or will strip when you use a phillips screwdriver or bit.

There is a thread in the '!!!Tech Articles!!!' list that has been contributing to the myth of setting the tps to read .98v to 1.00v....

Check this link for a better description...
https://mustangforums.com/m_4613249/tm.htm

when a sensor is unplugged, the ecu goes into alternate strategies.
Unplugging a sensor is not a reliable way to diagnose a problem.

As Joel has suggested, start by checking for diagnostic codes...

good luck,
jason
