Default best cam to run

I have a stock 86 motor in my 83 mustang. Changed it to 600 carb. Stock heads. I want to change the cam but not sure which one would be the best. Whats the highest lift I can go with and not have to worry about PTV clearence?

hes saying you have to get some heads and intake as well as a cam. the heads will not flow enough for your cam to peak. the stock heads will choke over 5k and thats where most cams start to make there power. look into some gt40 heads along with a cam and valvetrain and gt40 intake all this can be had for probley 1500$ and will be a nice gain. you have to pay to play.

also ots cams have limits to what a 86 can take as there are no valve reliefs built into the pistons but furthermore ptv has nothing to do with lift ......but what ever cam you wanna swap in checking for ptv is always a must.. using a twisted wedge head on the 86 lower end is another option

My posts are slow.... No valve relief is a problem.Would be better of just to tear down and rebuild with different pistons.

I know it has more to do with duration than lift....

Thanks for the help....

there are many variables when selecting a H/C/I. What do you want the car to be a street car or drag car or someone in between? Another variable is of course your budget. if you want to build a budget streetcar, the best route seems to be the GT40 heads and intake along with a cam. The gt40 heads are around 400$ used, intake im not sure id guess 150$? cams are around 400$ valve train probley 500$. i am not sure on the cam you want to select for the gt40 setup. the gt40 setup is much better than stock but still is a restriction. so i would get a cam that favors the exhaust side of duration to compensate for the semi-restrictive heads. you might want to ask some of the more experianced guys which cam would be best but i would guess a 216/220 duration .525 lift would be a good cam??

are you makin the guy buy these brand new or what?
you can get gt40 heads from a junkyard or whereever for prolly 300 and a gt40 intake for about 200-250.
then a cams around 200.
so figure 750 max.
