what happens those little piece of palstic are made to shear off in the event there is something in the way ex: a childs arm, instead of breaking the kids are they shear. but since they are plastic they become brittle and bust into pieces.

remove the motor, remove the coverplate, remove the metal gear then clean out all the old grease and broken pieces of plastic. to reinstall you slightly grease the rollers and angle them then reinsert the gear might take you a few times to get it right.once it starts going in pack with some more grease and install the cover etc
