Gas smell problem

A couple of days ago i was driving around and noticed a strong gas smell coming from the exhaust and it started burning my eyes. And also it sometimes jerks in 2nd gear at low RPMs and sometimes wants to shut off when its idleing. Do you thinks a tuneup would fix this or is it something else?
