Default Cobra intake on 86 engine

Hey guys,

I'm lookin at an unmolested 86 Gt right now. I'm 16 and if I get it my bro doesn't wan't me doin alot of stuff to the engine. I don't think he'll car about basic bolt ons but I won't be able to talk him into a h/c/i swap for a while. I figure i'll do the MAF conversion and the basic stuff like a new tb, underdrive pulleys with a larger alternator, cai, etc. The very basic little power adders. I think I can talk him into a new intake though. So with the stock 86 heads(wich i've heard weren't too good) and the stock cam would the Cobra intake be okay? Would I notice a power gain worth mention? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Tony

the gains won't be astronomical but you'll get a bit from it. why dont you think he'll let you get the heads? is it that he doesn't want you to be digging into the motor that much, the power increase, cost...? you could grab a set of heads off of an explorer for pretty cheap and they're def better than the stockers you have. and they're cast iron so they look stock to the amature eye

honestly an intake swap won't really give you a seat of the pants feel but it's worth a try.. it won't hurt you..as to how much it'll help... a good h/c/i is what'll help that ride

Yeah I know. lol It's mainly he's concerned about me killin myself. And even though these cars aren't out of this world fast right away, I can see were he's comin from. And I completely understand. I figure for now i'll just throw a new intake on there and eventually i'll pick myself up a custom grind cam and some new heads. As long as I see some kinda gain i'm cool with it. I was just concerned cause my friend actually lost power with the new intake on his 4.6 so yeah. lol Anyone know about the stock 86 heads?

what you need to do is find a 5.0 out of a late-model explorer, has a gt40 intake, heads, and a slightly more torque-y cam
