Default best gears for aod

Im having a hard time deciding between 3.73's or 4.10's. It is a daily driver and im still using the stock 2.73's and I've gotta get rid of them. And how much difference will each make in the 1/4 ?

well i'll make it easy for you

if you enjoy stomping on the gas and NOT spinning tires unless it's wet, get the 3.73's that way it will still bog and you'll still be slow after you waste $600

if you want to be able to throw a set of cheater slicks on it, actually feel some torque and start beating honda civics...go w/ the 4.10's or 4.30's

now there is a HUGE downside to the 4.10's, your mileage will drop almost .005 miles per gallon over the 3.73's and if you figure it out, thats like 2 dollars a year in extra fuel

sorry if i sound harsh, but 3.73's are retarded for aod mustangs

if you had a 5-speed would you opt for 3.0's ? cuz thats basically what you will have as an aod/3.73 combo

now for some serious answers.......

i have owned 2 aod mustangs, both had 3.73's

one was a '90 GT , w/ gt40 intake , transgo shift kit, tci 2200 stall (never get lower than a 3000) , low gear set (2.84 1st, 1.55 2nd, wider OD, kevlar clutches) , shorty headers, dynomax exhaust, and sportsman pros it ran a whole 14.40 (which is what it ran w/ the stock 3.27's, and no belt 100% stock)

the other was a '90 'vert , shorty headers , and flowmaster catback, it busted out a stellar 15.10

now on the other hand...my '89 5-speed w/ 4.10's went 13.60 100% bone stock w/ 4.10's , a K&N filter, and sportsman pros (if it was an aod probably would have been a 14.20)

aod's lack serious gear, your 1st is 2.40 and 2nd is 1.47 ( a t5 has 3.35 1st)

multiply your 1st gear by rear end gear for "total gear"

now check out the aod compared to t5 w/ 4.10's in the aod and 3.08 in the t5

now you start to see ????

2.73-4.10 jump should knock 1 full second ET and maybe more

i still get 21 mpg w/ my 4.10's, and i tach 3k doing 85, go through the traps in 4th (3rd for you...1:1 gear) at about 5300-5400

you will NOT over rev, you will not tach 3500 doing 65 , people who say that are on crack and just say what they have heard

honestly....w/ an aod car, if you don't go 4.10 or have about 150 extra hp.....don't even bother , you'll be dissapointed

the dif in the 2 is only 250 more rpms....nothing in terms of gas mileage, but actually pretty big in terms of powerband

ok i'm tired of typing now

but...if you have a 331 h/c/i and aode and plan to run 11's on 100 shot then 4.10s aint the way to go, i was going for 4.10's but a buddy has them on a 95 vert s/c'd rand ran a 12.2, he ran out of gear just before the traps, in 3rd.

Very well said.

When I bought my gears I was undecided what I was going to do with my car so I just went with 3.90's. If you were to keep it NA I would go 4.10's without a doubt (unless you plan on doing some heavy modding to the motor). The difference between 3.73's and 4.10's is very minimal.

4.10's work well in a aod.. my 3.73's weren't enough when it was a aod ..one of my main reasons for converting to a 5 speed

DON'T FEAR THE GEAR!! nitrous_bob said it EXACTLY right as others said. From 2.73 to 4.10's you'll shyt when you feel the difference. I swapped just before snow flew, and I'm ITCHING for summer soooooooo bad to feel the beast again. Good luck and get a full rebuild kit, and your set. Let us know how you like em'!
