Give me the bad news , one way or another
Its time to face my fear of my t5 tranny. My car isnt out of storage just yet, soo i havent taken it to the transmission shop. Its grinding from 2nd to 3rd, which i was told was the synchro. Should i pay to get it fixed , or just go all out for the new t5. Its a daily driver from may to nov.

personally to do it right it wont be cheap either way.i mean comeon its not like ur only gonna change just 2nd-3rd gear synchro while ur in there.i mean what if theres somethign else wrong too.....like some bearing and what not?so dont expect that once u have ur transmission open, all u need is one syncro.be prepared to spend few extra dollars for unexpected stuff.one of those"well this bearing doesnt "feel" right but looks aight" u know what i mean?on the other hand u got spanking new tranny but its expensive..hmmmm.definetly rebuilding ur transmission would be still cheaper then new transmission.to tell u truth if i were in ur shoes i would check junkyards for some low mileage used transmissions and keep this tranny as spare.......or even sell it with new syncro later on.

I don't know how good you are with a wrench, but my second gear synchro went out and I ordered a rebuilt kit from www.thegearbox.com complete with a manual on how to do it. The kit was a little over $200. I'd never rebuilt a tranny before although I have done engines and rear axles so I figured how hard could it be. It really isn't too bad.
The other option is if you can pull the tranny yourself and take it somewhere you may save a few bucks since that would be all labor not really related to the trans rebuild and the shop wouldn't have to tie up a lift.

I just got a quote for a full rebuild on mine, minus gears and me pulling it $360. that includes all synchros, bearings, and small parts. Also a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty is included, needless to say I am going that route as I already have the FRPP Z spec tranny.
