Some questions bout 86 GT tune up
Hey guys,
Sorry to keep askin lots of questions but i'm tryin to avoid messin anything up. lol Anyway, my car needs a major oil change and a good tune up. I got the info on the oilchange squared away so now for the tune up. As far as I know, tune up consist of a new cap & rotor, new plugs and new plug wires. Right?
First, the cap and rotor, Ima just get a basic MSD c&r. I'm leavin the car stock so... I was looking at this one.

I was lookin at the 2nd one down. Is that the correct one? If not could someone link me up to the basic Red Msd cap & rotor kit for an 86 5.0?
As for wires and plugs I was just gonna get whatever the local advanced auto parts had that fit my engine. Should this be alright? If not what brand(s) should I look into?

RE: Some questions bout 86 GT tune up
Why waste the extra money on the msd cap and get autoparts store wires.. either do all the parts at jegs and get some ford racing wires or just pic all the stuff up at your local parts store and it'll for sure be right

i have ford racing wires, and love em on my car.
my cars red, but i have a ford blue "theme" going on in the engine bay
<~~~pic
if i where you i wouldent sweat it, and just get everything from your local store.
i dont know what kinda spark plug to recomend (lol, thats something i have to figure out for my car!), but being that your stock....just go with the basic OEM plug.
good luck.

Thanks guys. I figure if I order the wires they'll be the ford racing ones. Ima do a red theme sorta on my engine bay. Thats why I really wanna get the red msd c&r. lol And yeah, i'm just gonna go with basic spark plugs that fit the car. Anyone know the gap amount for a spark plug on an 86 5.0?

a
Thanks man. And yes definatelly. While i'm here, I gotta ask another question. The car has been having trouble starting. I know for a factit hasn't had a tune up in at least 2 years but i'm almost certain it's been way longer then that. I wouldn't be surprised if it still had the origional wires. It still has the rubber distributor glove on it so that says something. lol But anyway, between that and the fact that it's got very old oil in it, old filters, and new high octane gas mixed with whatever was in the tank, do you think all that should lead to starting problems? For instance I have to turn the key and floor the throttle for a second to get some fuel to the engine. And it idles funny, and just bogs down randomly and all that. Does that sound like stuff that'll get fixed with a nice oil change and a good tune up?

Dont worry about the questions man. That's why people are here, to help when they can. You should go ahead and change the fuel filter also.

could be your plugs.
my cars pretty iffy on cold mornings, but i have light weight pullies, and such that prob cause that.
i wouldent worry about any engine issues untill you do the full tune up.
for all you know its just the plugs and such.
if you still have that old oil, change it ASAP
