Need some help with 5.0 setup
I am trying to help out a friend with his Mustang. I am a Chevy guy (ducking head, covering up LOL) but have no hate towards any make. I personally always liked the styling of the early 90's notchback wich is what he has (a 1991). Anyway he is having some problems with his setup. I will try to tell you guys everything I know about it.It's a 5 speed manual 373 gears. It's a 306 cube motor aftermarket pistons (not sure what kind or the compression ratio of the motor The heads are Edelbrock RPM performers ,GT40 upper and lower intake,24lb injectors,a Summit E303 camshaft wich when looked up has specs of 282/282-.498/.498,MSD 6AL distributer,65mm MAF and 65MM throttle body. Thats about all I could get out of him on the particulars. The car at idle hunts around,it will idle choppy as expected with the cam sounding nice but when it warms up the idle jumps up to where the lope is gone as if you were applying a bit throttle. Again I am not a Ford guy and I think he still has the stock ECU or whatever Ford calls it. I have no idea of what engine parameters the stock computer controls. I would think only fuel wich brings me to my next question. Should he have an aftermarket "chip" or something like it to run this setup? Where should his timing be set at? Any help is appreciated and I realize this is a real vague description to try and help out with. Thanks in advance for any and all helpfull comments.

yes he should definatly have a chip with his mods, usually idle problems can be blamed on a vacuum leak, he could also try cleaning out his iac, idle air control motor, which is the cylindrical attachment on the front of the throttle body.

OK so it's called an EEC I have a friend that can pull up codes. What chip do you guys suggest? How can we tell if it already has an aftermarket chip? It is possible it does but we would not know any better and would hate to buy one in haste. Cleaning out the IAC motor would regular carb cleaner work for this? Timing is another sticking point, any suggestions as to where it should be? Again I really appreciate the help here guys keep the suggestions coming.

OK quick question again where do you guys think this motor makes power to? He's a young kid and is shifting at 5200 rpm's. Again i'm no expert on Ford motors but 5200 is not exactly screamin. We ran my buddys stock 98SS (LS1) yesterday and pulled him but I think he is leaving some HP on the table short shifting at 5200.........

I believe the computer is supposed to cut fuel around 6200 and ive heard the valves will float after 5800. I have a auto and floored it shifts somewhere between 5500-5700 i believe.
