Ok, well you know you've got to have #1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke, so do as you were and crank it till you've got compression there with your finger. Now as MJR said set it to TDC by lining up the pointer on the balancer to 0, now you're ready for the distributor. Notice the position of the number 1 plug on the cap, and align the dist. in a way where the rotor points to the number 1 plug when it's fully inserted. It can be tricky, and you'll probly be a tooth or two off first try, but make sure you have it right.
