Cam Change

Cam Change
This is my first time changing my cam and I'm doing everything myself. My question is, can i change the actual cam myself if im really careful or should I have my friend do it.(he's done about 8) My brother said that I maybe should let my buddy do it b/c the bearing knick really easily, but my friend is going to be busy until about tuesday and im anxious to get my car back together.
While i was talkin my motor apart i took the smog pump off, does anyone know what size belt i should be buying a part number would be nice.
My last question is, the metal pipe that splits into 2 that goes to the back of each head, what should i do wit that now that my smog has been deleted?

RE: Cam Change
I would suggest letting your friend show you how to put the cam in. That way you can learn, and you know you won't risk damaging a bearing. If you get anxious, and score a bearing, you'll be waiting even longer to get it finished. Cam job should never be rushed, I know first hand. As for the heads without the pipe, there are threaded insert that go in place of the holes. They are usually used for accy. mounts like on the front of the motor. If you have an old pair of heads, you can pull them from where the accy. (alternator, pwr steering) used to mount. They can be tricky to get out though, maybe your local machine shop has some around. Another note on removing smog components, I'm sure you paid careful attention to what parts you're pulling and why. Many people yank off whatever they think they don't need, not thinking about the computer that thinks those parts are still there. In other words, unless you ECM has been modified specifically for use without certain parts, you will likey even LOSE power, and more likely, drivability. Barnes and Noble has often carried a book all about helping you with these ideas called "how to understand, service, and modify ford fuel injection & electronic engine control" by Charles Probst. Hope this helps.

RE: Cam Change
Thanx a lot, Ill wait for my buddy to help and I'll have to pick up that book sometime soon.
I found out the part number for the belt, its 850K6. <---- If anyone needs it, there it is.
