take the cats off and go off road h pipe. check fan and see if the motor is working properly. i have a friend with a 94 and his fan was working but not strong enough. what thermostat are you running?

has it always been this way ?
the rattling is probably the heat shield rusting off , rip it off
if you used a t-stat w/ no check ball in it...you will have that problem at idle

Usually the cats clog, causing lack of power.Or come apart and rattle like hell. The problem you describe sounds like a flow problem. What does the inside of the radiator look like.

yea i would check you fan, see if anythign is in the radiator, and get some coolant mixed in with that water, i hear it is bad after i while to run straight water in there, it causes some kind of lime build up or some crap...but did you add the stock cats to a offroad x???

Someone already mentioned thermostat. Start there, they are cheap and easy to replace. Also, how close are you monitoring your car's over heating? If you are within just a few degrees, it may just be the lack of air going through your car when you are driving. That's why I always hook up my temp gauge as well as the factory one in the dash. That way you can monitor what temp your thermostat opens at, but not be alarmed everytime the new gauge rises a bit.

On a firebird i had the cats had gone bad. The exhaust place told me that overtime they break apart and cause a really annoying rattle that sounds like a rock in a can. Relplaced the cat and no more rattle.
