Default Head Choice?

Got $1000 to spend on new heads. What is the best choice for the money?

Spend an extra $300-400 and get some AFR, Edelbrock, Canfields etc. Or search around for some good used ones, you should be able to find a decent pair of used assembled for about $1k or under.

What type of HP increase roughly do you think I can get? I have stock heads now but the engine is bored.

I was just reading an article in a Mustang magazine about AFR heads replaced from stock heads on a 351. They tested it with both and there was a 75 HP gain. I don't know what a gain would be for a 5.0, but those heads were about 1500. I've heard from other people that they are pretty top notch though.

Imo there are a lot of choices out there and heads equally compared between the ranks will split hairs between pros and cons of one vs another...but afr are good and canfield are good to...I may switch to a set of canfields pending the result of my buddies build of a 306 and custom cam who will be using canfields.....so we'll see

A decent set of heads like AFR's with the bolt ons you already have could yield 50+rwhp, maybe more. Not to mention aluminum heads weigh about half what irons do, and the extra heat dissipation can allow for a bit more compresion or a slightly more agressive tune.
