Default Engine Revs itself?

I bought my 1995 5 speed Mustang GT, about 4 months ago.

After Driving around for a while I noticed that it starts revingitself when I'm not moving. It'll normally rev the engine from 500rpm up to 1,000rpm sometimes it'll drop a little bit more below 500 and will jump up that much higher above 1,000. It gets very annoying at long stop lights and it's wasting a load of gas.

Anyone know what might cause this to happen? Any info would be much appreciated.

Wow thanks for all the info everyone. I'll try all of those and hopefully that'll fix the problems.

I dont even know all the mods my car has yet, i know the stuff i've done, but not what the past owner has done, other than an upgraded clutch (which is insanely hard to press) and a cold air intake.

edit:: Here is a photo of the car when i first got it, since then i've replaced the old foggy headlights with some new ones. and added a few other things inside.

On the 1995 , alot of times at the dealership, I have cleaned the MAF Element , Cold Air Intake Sensor on the Air inlet tube(air filter), and repalced the air filter if dirty.

Any IAC issues, it gets replaced if OEM, I have cleaned plenty, some come back, some dont, , others work by cleaning, some it helps, etc etc etc, so I just replace.
