yeah I'd say the trans being out is a reason it won't start... considering the freakin' starter bolts to the tranny/bellhousing!!! little hard to start without that huh??

With the tranny out, there's a good chance your buddy didn't even get a starter with the car. The starter bolts throught the bell housing on the front of the transmission. That is the reason why the car won't start. Most likely because the starter isn't even there. Are you sure you guys are capable of putting a tranny back in? It's a little more complicated than just 6 bolts and a driveshaft.

I am not understanding something here. The starter is hooked up, the motor cranked before and now with everything the same it doesn't? Did he change the flexplate or move wires or screw with anything on the car. More importantly, if the car cranked before, did you ever hear it start before he bought it with the tranny out?

it cranked once when he got it to his place the battery died and now we put a new battery in and it wont even click on or anything the fuel pump turns on so fuel is getting in and im sure its getting spark and we didnt mess with anything i just went over with a battery and tried to help him start it and i had like 5 minutes to look at it but everything is still the same as when it cranked b4

well if there is a bellhousing on it then make sure starter is tight on it/ bolted in well cause the starter case picks a ground up through the case and if it's loosely bolted on then that may be the prob
