Default GT40 intake and stock heads

I have a chance to buy gt40 upper and lower intakes for $175. I only have stock heads. Without porting, would this be a decent upgrade for the money? I'm not counting out getting better heads soon, but for the time being, is it worth it? Thanks.

It depends on your overall goal....if you want to do a set of heads later. I would wait till you have the money for the heads. Then do both at the sametime...since you'll already behalf way there by removing your intake...you dont want to do the work twice....at least I dont....ha...just save up for a set of GT-40 heads or a set of some used aluminum heads...search around. Then you can do a H/C/I all at once...thats a noticable upgrade...but just slapping a manifold on....its not worth the work...hardly noticable.

Thanks for the quick response. That's what I'll probably do then. My research tells me this is a pretty good price for the intakes so I'll probably get them, wait until I get the heads and cam and then put them on like you said. I don't want to break the bank on a trickflow trio just yet. My ultimate goal is to get a motor stand and then a short block and build from there. But I'd like to get what I can from the current engine while I'm at it. I'm pretty new to auto stuff, particularly the mechanical aspect, but I recently got the car I've wanted for 15 years or so, so I gotta learn some way.

is it a tubular gt40 ? cobra gt40 ?? or explorer gt40 ???

tubular gt40 is worth it just for looks...but performance wise ?? you won't gain 5 hp...i did it a ported tubular on my '90 and noticed absolutely nothing.

its not very hard to swap in and out, you will notice a little improvment but don't expect to drop a second off of your et or anything

IMO its a waist without heads, your getting air in but not getting it out....even if you did port the stock heads you may have gain of maybe 10 hp on the highest side, stock heads are soo restricted, its a waist to even put it on the car till you get new heads...Remember this flow is every thing, if your pulling air in you need to be able to have it flow out, all you would be doing is just loading the engine with an abundance of air with no place to go......its like putting a square peg in a round hole just not logical....

Thanks guys. It's an explorer intake, btw. I'll wait until I get some heads before bothering.

well again...if it was a tubular and your not gonna do heads for a year.....i'd still do it.

but an explorer....no not gonna knock a tenth off even, MIGHT gain 5 hp w/ no heads

save ur money for a elderbrock intake if it was me, but u will not see any power upgrades with a gt-40 with stock heads, so be better to purchase some victor jr heads and ditch gt-40 and go all out with the trickflow intake or elderbrock , but thats just me!
