Default finally picked up some heads...

Well I went to the junkyard over spring break and dug out some gt-40p's from a totalled explorer, what a pita. Anyways, the outside has a nice coat of rust and from the looks of the odometer, the heads have 200k miles on them, but it could have been 120k, not sure if they show the 100k digit, didn't look too hard, oh well. I'll just assume they have a **** ton of miles on them. I'm going to try and get most of the rust off, clean em good, and put on a coat of paint after some work. I figure i'll need to get new springs and valves, is this correct? I would like to keep costs as low as possible, this is a budget build and a daily driven car. Anything else I should worry about with high mile heads?

Other mods I plan on doing: cam(e303, steeda #19, maybe tfs 1), maybe some new lifters as well, headers if I need em, got an aftermarket set now but not sure what they are. Any other advice on freshing these things up is totally welcome!

bring them to a shop and have them checked for cracks and milled down to insure a tight seal on the block between the headgaskets.

if doing a cam swap, maybe upgrade to some tougher springs for more lift.

believe me, do not go on the cheap side with heads. they are the foundation to any engine build.

By cheap I mean not doing unnecessary porting. Do I need new lifters? thanks

id get a quote for a small port job on the heads while there in the shop, might get a good price.

with 200k on them I would definitely change the lifters.

Ok so i'll order some lifters. Now I did a little searching around and it seems that I can re-use my push rods but do I use the rockers that were on the explorer? Also, new springs and valves will probably be in order, or at least springs. Does this all sound about right?

How much did you pick the heads up for?
Get them magna-fluxed and hot tanked, then machined, and a valve job will also be necessary(prob go for a three angle) (maybe bigger valves IDK)
In addition you will NEED better springs with a new cam, and while your at it some roller lifters wouldn't hurt.

I dont know how much time, you have but if you cant afford a mild port then do some semi extensive research, be careful, and do it yourself while the heads are dissembled.
