Default can rear end weight/pad be removed?

after an aluminum drive shaft and/or gear change has been installed , can the weight plate on the rear end near the front seal be removed with out causing any problems ? this is on a 93 gt 5spd. thanks.

I've always removed mine after a gear change since i heard they were there for the original gears and if you replace them the weight is not needed. Anyway i alway's remove them with no problem.
