88 Mustang 5.0

I recently had my 88 mustang put on the dyno, they had it up to 178 mph on the dyno. When they let off of the throttle something popped. I'm pretty sure it was the tranny, does anyone have any idea what could have went? There is a shift kit in the transmission. I'm looking at the #K5 kit from www.ford-aod.com and also the #K5S lock-up shaft and a stall converter. Is there anything else I would need to have the transmission rebuilt? Mostly I want to know what you guys think may have broke on the transmission. The rearend is fine and the motor runs fine, thats why I believe it is the transmission. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i don't even know where to start on this thread , does the car no longer move ? to go 178 mph...you either have like 1.55 gears or about 1000 hp

thats what i was thinking, how could it do 178 cuz i have 3.73 gears. I didnt really believe it, but every other run on other cars read right. the car moves but shakes horribly and grinds going into gears. the fluid is full. i dont believe it went 178 but thats what it said.

well..... aod's are a complicated beast......and very expensive to rebuild

grinds going into gears ? an automatic ? the shaking is from being unbalanced.....i think theres more than 1 thing going on

more than one thing? you mean in the transmission, or are you talking about other parts in the drivetrain?

in the trans...if 1 thing broke, more probably broke, and moreso the longer you drove on it if you did.

was the trans just a stock aod ?

yea it was stock, besides a stage 1 shift kit. i drove it about 2 miles home thats it. i havent done anything since. i want to rebuild it and obvisouly make it better than stock. what do you think about www.ford-aod.com and the #K5 and #K5S? Also i would do the overdrive and reverse bands. Do you think there would be anything else that may need to be replaced? I saw some throttle valve plug kit, boost valve kit and hi rev governer kit, would these be worth it? i'm just trying to figure out what would be worth it and what wouldnt be worth it. i know aod's are not the best but i know im not swapping it out so thats what i got.

i just got done with my tranny.

i blew my rear seal, my tailshaft bearing, and u-joint on the dyno about a week ago..........


i would start there, because my car was grinding and acting crazy, but it also dripped fluid out of the rear seal, but this could happen soon to yours.

this is a EASY fix as it comes, so i would start there!

i believe it. i have 3.08 gears in mine. i got on the interstate the other day and was going 145 in 3rd gear. my spedo is spot on.
