oil pressure not stable..
I have a 94 mustang gt 5 speed. When i first got the car the oil pressure ran almost in the middle of the L - H range. After about a year now its starting to run lower. The other day it was near L and then i took it on the highway for about an hour to go to a friends house and when i got there it was back up into the mid range. this morning i went out and started my car and drove it about 2 miles and now its back down around the L. Any suggestions?
Also a friend of mine has a 95 gt (auto) and his stays up around the upper end around H.

RE: oil pressure not stable..
my suggestion is for you to do yourself a favor and install a good 0-100psi mechanical guage, this way you will know exactly what your oil press is at all times.
and consider using a different grade of oil
also it sounds like your oil pressure sending unit may be on the fritz, your best bet is a mechanical guage.

actually i was thinking about that today.. Where do you hook those up at? and roughly what should my pressure be? Different grade of oil? like what..right now im running 5w30 and sometimes 10w 30. Thanks for the help

the guage will have a fitting that will replace your oil pressure sending unit, and the fitting will have a nylon hose that will be routed throught your fire wall and into the back of the guage, this will give you accurate reaadings. as far as oil grade, it was suggested to me to try 10w-40, pr 20w-50, I would start with 10w-40 first and see how that goes then decide what you should do from there.

Don't trust the facory settup. Mine did the same thing. It started by reading low on some days and normal on others until it finally only read low. It was the sending unit. Replaced the sending unit and the gauge is 3/4 into the box. Check the gauge by grounding the wire that goes to the sending unit. The gauge should read high. If the gauge is ok then replace the sending unit. The sending unit is cheap.

The factory gauge only LOOKS like a gauge. In fact, the sending unit is a simple on-off type used for an idiot light. Ford installed a resistor, some just after the sender connection and some on the back of the cluster to keep the gauge in the middle of the range. My 95 Explorer is set up the same way, always reads in the middle regardless of RPM. This web site: http://www.sfuller.net/projects/cobra/oilgauge/ discusses how to modify your existing "gauge" to really be a gauge. It was written for the Cobra but applies to all models with the exception of the resistor. On some models, the resistor is under the hood, just after the sending unit connection.

I have a 92 GT and that oil pressure gauge is floating up and down. For some reason, the rpm was also being affected and the car would eventually turn off. Since I have an auto, when the shifter was in overdrive, the car had poor idle qualities when the oil pressure and the rpm went down until the car finally turned off. The fuel was fine, the water temp was fine also. As well as the battery. I think my computer is busted. What do you think, is it just the guage?

It almost sounds like a bad ground some where. But does it idle when it is park? You might try turning up the idle. Also it could just be the gauges because my car did the same **** and was just the bad sending unit.
