just wondering what everyone thought about edelbrock heads. a guy i know has a new set for sale is will sell them to me for 850.00. they are the performer heads for pedestal mount heads...basically a bolt on replacement for the stock heads. should i pick them up or save up for a set of AFR 165's

personally I'd save your money.. the performer 5.0 heads are nothing special.. I have a friend who has a set of rpm's that he'll sell me for that price but I'd rather save for something better

The Performers I worked with had single springs, cheap retainers, cheap seals, the valves tips pitted and burred with 4 passes and approx. 400 street miles, and the spring install heights varied by as much as .030".
The RPM's had the same single springs, cheap retainers, and cheap seals the performer had, the valves were better (but not what I would expect for the cost of the heads), the spring install heightalso varied as much as .030", and it had no lower spring retainer (or cup), there was just ahardened shim in the pocket cut into the head.
They can be made into good heads but it is expensive. I paid$1100 for the RPM's new and put another$600into them with good parts (valves, springs, retainers, locks, seals, cups, shims)and labor (multi angle valve job and machining to fit the cups).$1700 and the hassle, the heads are not wouth it. There are better heads with better parts for a better price out there.

I run em on my mustang and ported and polished them myself, easy to do, and all after market heads need it done. As for springs, double springs are only needed for higher lift cams and again easy to do your self as well as the shims, as with all after market heads, they are a base platform to customize with your needs.
I ran a kidwith a 91 roller block andwas injected with all the Trickflow goodies including heads and he thought it was going to be a walk in the park against my 84 non-roller and carburated, RPM headded motor....He was saddly mistaken, ate HIS cake!
If the ones you are looking at look real clean I say go ahead, but I'ld say $700 tops, New ones are $1100.
