Will a chip fix this?

Get a MAF from a 94/95 mustang, 6er or 5.0. That is the same as a cobra MAF, and with you cobra ECM, it will run like one(meaning it will run your 24lbers) With the stock ECM, it would only run 19lbers. Look on ebay for the MAF.

It is true for the sn95 Cobra (1994-95)
Fox 5.0HO Mustang - 55mm housing / F1ZF Sensor
1993 Cobra - 70mm housing / F1SF Sensor
94-95 Mustang & Cobra - 70mm housing / F2VF Sensor
The 93 Cobra does not share its MAF with any other vehicle (that I have personally seen... supposedly there is a tbird out there though...)

I changed the thermostat tonight. I went with a 195* (stock) and the car does warm up better now.
I didnt notice a huge difference when I took it for a ride so Im still going to need to get it tuned.

You don't need to get a tune, you need to get the right MAF meter.
The 93 Cobra used a 70mm housing with sensor 'F1SF'
Find the right meter for your ecu, and the car should run well.

Hey man, I read your problems and I think that if you are running to rich, you would either have a tuning issue or you could have some other problems that may be causing this.
If you had a new FPR (fuel press. reg.) Installed, did they set your fuel pressure to the correct spec? If you have to high or too low of fuel pressure it will definately effect your a/f mixture.
You also might want to check and see if your O2 sensors are working correctly, they control your short term and long term fuel trims in which if you can get a scan tool somehow from a friend or a shop, they could check out those two and diagnose whether or not your car is dumping to much fuel.
also that 160* degree thermostat is what im leaning towards right now, (im just telling you a couple more things if that isnt the case) it will open way to early, (35* premature) and cause your motor to run too cool too soon, and when your motor is cold at start up it is overly rich to heat the motor up, so that could be whats happening right now.
either way, first i'd check your thermo. then if that doesnt solve your problem, definately check to see if you have correct fuel pressure and if your o2 sensors arent wacked out and telling your computer to richen your mixture to compensate for a lean combustion...
good luck!

I replaced the thermostat with a 195 yesterday- same problem.
I didnt check the O2 sensorsand Im not sure what the FP is set at but Im pretty sure its right.

hook up a FP gauge and see what your reading when you first turn on the car. then try another test while the car is running and you blip the throttle. you should see it drop, then rise back up. check those o2's also. they'll sneak up on you and throw your a/f ratio straight out the window.
