Default New to the Fox body world and need some info

I just bought a 88 GT AOD and it needs a little work......As most do. Anyway, the car runs pretty strong for the age but there are a few problems. First, the car seems to load up when driving around town, almost like a two-stroke. I just rev it a few times and it clears out. There is no smoke coming out the pipes either. I just put new plugs, wires, cap and all that stuff on today with no change. The car has the stock headers with some cheap mufflers so it seems to not be breathing well. I was wondering what would cause the car to build up like that. Could it be that I need a new coil or something?
Second, the transmission shifts like it should when getting to speed but when I slow down and drive around town it seems to stay in third.
If any of you all have any ideas it would be appreciated..... Thanks.

i would look for vac not being attached/ broken going to the fuel pressure regulator. if you pull the vac line off...it bumps to a constant 42 psi instead of regulating between 36-42

does the tranny bog down ? or just doesn't wanna downshift. believe it or not...thats probably normal on an aod, i remember both of mine not ds'ing very well

Thanks guys, it doesnt have cats so that was not the problem or the vac lines. The timing was off just enough to make it do that.

ive seen mechanics replace transmissions, when the timing was off, due to the fact they were transmission specialist or just plain lazy.
