Default coolant issue

A buddy of mine has almost the twin to my 89gt except its bone stock and an auto. He has this problem with a coolant smell and some very thin white smoke coming out of the heating vents. I took a look at it today and I know the car needs a heater core, and that would explain the smell, but not the smoke. I drove the car around for about a half hour until I saw the smoke. I pulled over and while the smoke was coming out of the vents I checked under the hood but didn't see anything and checked the exhaust pipes and nothing, no smell, no smoke anywhere but the vents. The smoke is very thin and unless you are looking for it, it's barely noticable, but it is there. He said since he has gotten the car about two months ago he has had to add about 1/3 of a gallon of coolant total. Any ideas because I'm pretty stumped?

Thanks, I knew the core was shot, but I didn't know it would cause smoke or steam/vapor or anything like that to come out of the vents.

Since its getting warm out you can bypass the heater core temporarily by connecting the two hoses together.
I had to do that a while ago and I put a small piece of copper pipe in the lines and clamped it down.
Ive since gotten the heater core replaced.

he is exactly right. when my heater core went it blew smoke out all over the place litteraly filled my car with smoke. i bypassed the core for a while till i got around to replacing it. when it gets on your windsheild it just doesnt want to come off either. you have to clean it a bunch of times before you get the coolant residue off it
