ok i'm not getting any fire when spinning the motor but when i turn the key off the coil will fire for a second as i turn the key back, this is the first time to start the new motor the car sat up for years not sure about the wiring but it seems to be right, there is power going to the coil when the key is on, any ideas on what to check

is it a cfi/efi or carbed 85???= duraspark

with a test light make sure you got power to the coil in koeo mode and after that put test light on the neg side of coil and crank and see if is flickers/blinks really fast if it does..most likely the duraspark box is bad ..if it doesn't and the cap and rotor are known good = possible bad stator in dizzy.......does ignition box look similar to this??:

the box looks like that with out the lines and it says switches on it i think it came outof 83 or 84 gt got it off of ebay from some with good feed back they said it worked fine when pulled off. what is the stator in dizzy.

stator is the pick up coil inside the distributor..you'll see a reluctor/star whell on the distributor and beside that'll be a magnet type little box...the wires that come out of distributor attach to it= this part ID'S tdc/#1 cyl as to know when to deliver spark to each cylinder and I wouldn't trust any parts expecially electonic ones purchased off ebay[&:]

the pick up coil from a 88 mustang should be the same right i checked with parts store and they gave me the same part number for 85 5.0 and 88 5.0

nope!!! 88 is efi and does not have the right connector on the end due to the fact 88 uses a tfi module....that plugs into stator= 3 prongs and 85 has a pig tail connector = not same....85 cfi/efi is the same but not for the carbed model

your right i just looked atthe 88 doesn't look the same must have had part number for efi 85 that sucks


another question i just clean out my fuel tank and put it back on before i cleaned it out i was getting fuel but it had rust in it, i put on 2 inline fuel filters since i cleaned the tank, one before the fuel pump and one after i've checked both filters neither had gas in them after iturn the motor over, could the 2 filters be to much to pump the gas are did i mess the fuel pump up when rust went through it

^^^^no if you drained the lines..then you may have to crank it a while before it sucks fuel up to the carb...one more reason I like elec pumps
