I don't think the V8 input shaft will swap over to the 4cyl trans. I am pretty sure the number of teeth on the end of it(Input Shaft) are different between the 4cyl and v8

No they are actually the same. So you could swap the input shafts but you would still have the 4 cyl t5 so it is cheaper to spend 10 bucks on the pilot bearing then 100 bucks to get your case torn apart and change your input shaft.

ok, I have the same thing here. I have a 4 cyl notch with a t-5 in it and I just want to make it into an a-5 trans. Is this doable? are the cases the same? can it be built into a stronger v-8 style t-5? any help is appreciated

i like to open the case so i can inspect the gears, but its a bit of work compared to just doing a bearing!!lol
AND FOR THE RECORD EVERYONE THE INPUT SHAFT SPLINES ARE THE SAME ON A 4 AND A V8!!! so stop muddling this up. i know ace knew. but someone posted about it. i mean obviously if they would have read it would be apparant. the 4cylinder throw out bearing is differant though. i got the wrong one by a parts place last few weeks ago. looks the same to small. slides over the splines and gets stopped by the retainer. so peope keep that in mind too

yes the gears inside are differant ratios, but doesnt mean they wont work together...or will.. i dunno never swapped inputs, just know it could most likely work from hear say, lol. for me if i use a 4 im just gunna get the bearing swap(pilot)

Are you 100% sure? When I pulled mine apart to take to the trans shop, I know their was a difference in the number of teeth on the end(NOT THE SPLINE END BUT THE END INSIDE TRANS). I wanna say the 4cyl was 19 teeth and the V8 was 23 or 24. I have the 4 cyl one and the V8 one in the garage I will get pics later and count the number of teeth

So just to clarify, to use a 4cyl tranny in a 8cyl, all you need to do is change the pilot bearing (thats the one that is inside the clutch flywheel, right)
and the bearing you can use is an 83 diesel ranger?

yes, the pilot bearing is pressed into the back of the crank, just pull the pressure plate off and youll see it. do yourself a favor and rent the tool to get the old one out, this can cause excessive beer consumption without it!

The one on the left is from a Fox Body 4cyl trans, it has 20 teeth on the end of it. You can tell the nub is smaller verifying its a 4cyl.
The one on the right is from a 94 V8 T5, it has 23 teeth on the end of it. You can see it has the bigger V8 nub for the pilot bearing on top.
If you can still swap them out even though the number of teeth is different, I will be pissed. I spent $90 to get the right one for the fox body since the trans I used was from a 94.
