4.10 explorer gears?????????
A friend of mine who seems to know quite a bit about mustangs and such has been helping me work on my car. He has 4.10s from and explorer that he will sell me for dirt cheep. Has anyone else done this or do you think it would be a bad idea as far as hp they can handle and installing gears that have been used in two different cars for who know how many miles. I doubt I would pay much more then $20. Any input?

if it were my car which it's not, mind you, i would want to use a new product and a product designed for a horsepower application, it would probably work but for one they are used and for two an explorer is hardly a muscle car, although they may be pretty tough if the are designed to tow things and such but i would definately order some quality ones from a reputable company.

plus if the gears are worn at all they could have notches in them or cracks and if they mess up it could lock up the axles and you can say goodbye to your clutch, trans, and everything back there. the reason i know this is my uncle bought used gears and that happened to him and it ripped out the clutch, trans, driveshaft, broke the axle housing and it was bad.

Buy new gears, like gt350 said if those gears lock up, you could go from just spending a little bit of money to a whole of a lot more than just what buying new gears would have cost

The price is right but it's a lot of work to go through for used equipment. Personally, I would want new. Being that they are 4:10's you will probably not be driving easy with them....go new.

I buy used gear whenever possible. There's no problem with used parts, even gears so long as their setup properly. New gears won't last any longer than used gears if their both setup right.
BTW - for what its worth I've got a USED trac-loc carrier and 4.10 gears from an Explorer in my car. 1.56 60' and 11.40's @ 120+mph ... the gears are of no concern.

Ok well right now it’s a group of people with 2000 some posts combined saying not to vs. someone with 8621 just himself saying it would be fine to.... ugh. Anything in particular to look for in the gears to see how worn they are or just overall if the tips and edges look worn, cracked (obviously). I will be doing this with a guy who knows his **** so I’m not worried about install. And hell if I blow up my transmission and clutch etc it’s only an excuse to get new stuff………
