Default Check Engine Light(HELP!)

So I've got my 88 mustang running perfectly, it passes the actual emissions portion of the smog test easily, but I've got one thing holding me back. The check engine light comes on while it's turing over, instead of coming on when the key is turned to the "ON" position and turning off when the starter is engaged. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Cory

Yep..... that's normal for non-Cali '88 setups.... the CEL became "functional" in '89+ models.

No prob...... checked the MIL strategy in the GUFB document for the '88 Cali strategy, and it is normal. Here's the document extract.

Additional features of the MIL are:

1. It is disabled during VIP tests.
2. It is turned on continuously in CRANK mode until a PIP is detected as a
bulb check.
The bulb check can be disabled by setting MILLIM equal to
zero.

I wouldn't worry about it if i could smog the damn thing, but as it is I can't smog it and therefore can't register it.

So it's fine? Damnit, how do I prove that to the smog place? I might just have to take it somewhere else. DAMNIT!

Thanks for your help

You wouldn't be able to point me in the direction of some sort of proof, would you?

What MJ said...... they need to check the requirements for the year of your car, not use the existent ones and make them retroactive..... that's a loose-loose situation. Here's a snapshot of the strategy document from FoMoCo.... it should help you prove your case.
