Default clutch or ignition problem?

Well, I noticed yesterday, that when I put my car in 2nd, and i'm accelerating(at a normal rate) the car will kinda skip along. The tach doesn't rise, but it feels like the clutch is slipping. Like it slips then catches, slips, catches, etc. But if I give it a bit more throttle, it kinda goes away. I did the typical test of gettin into 5th at 45mph and punching it. The rpm's didn't really rise, the car just kinda gurgled along. Is it possible that it's not worn all over, but just in one spot?Or could it be my ignition coil? Maybe the "skipping" i'm feeling isn't the drivetrain skipping, it's the coil not supplying spark. Cause i've also noticed if I drive the car for a few hours, it'll be goin down the road in 5th, and kinda stall out, but the momentum keeps it going, like it's choking. lol What does this sound like?

Default RE: clutch or ignition problem?

i sometimes had the same problem in my 95, where it would stumble around for a few seconds, then when i'd apply more throttle it'd jump and take off almost like hitting nitrous. i couldnt narrow it down, so i ended up buying a new IAC motor, fuel pump and filter, injectors and MAF. im not familiar with the 86 FI system (if it even has it, i dont know when they went from SD to MAF or if it even has a carb. its possible that its a fuel delivery system because a spark problem would be worse with a more dense mixture eg. higher throttle positions. try replacing the fuel filter and looking at the voltage going to the pump, as well as monitering the fuel pressure to see if if "snags" at all. hope this helps.

The rpm's arent really going to climb that fast when your in 5th at 45mph lol, and from what your saying its not a clutch problem.

Yeah, that's what i was thinking.I don't think you should test yourcarby punching it in 5th gear [&:]. It's not meant to be foracceleration, it's justa cruising gear (unless you have a road race 5th gear).

my car does this as well

if im in 5th gear and punch it, it feels like the clutch slips because the car kinda jerks back and forth

Haha, guys, I wasn’t testing the performance of 5th at 45, I was testing the clutch. I read on here that if you punch it in 5th around 45 or so, and your rpm’s soar up, but the car doesn’t rapidly accelerate, then the clutch is slipping. However if you punch it and the car just kinda bogs and gurgles along, then the clutch is fine.
