Default Belt Question????

I am looking totake off my a/c, smog, and power steering pumps. This is my first mustang and trying to do as much asI can myself. Iwas wondering if I can just remove all these pumps/pulleys and just and get a smaller belt or do I have to buy delet pulleys for all these pumps. Thanks.

well i wouldnt advise getting rid of the power steering pump unless your guna b drag racin it .. but you can just pull the smog pump off and buy a ford racing a/c delete kit and that will move the power steering pump up to where the a/c was and then you will need to route a 71.5" belt so no, u dont have to but delete pullys

Default RE: Belt Question????

I have a friend running a 92 GT as a daily driver. He has A/c completely gone, AIR/smog pump gone, and a flaming river steering box that replaced his power steering. I wouldn't recommend the manual steer if it is your daily driver. The manual steer makes it harder to manuever around parking lots, it also started to make some noise when it got over 20,000 miles, and my friend never rides around without a spare serpentine belt in the car. He has snapped 3 or 4 in the past 2 years because he is just running the water pump, crank and alternator with a very high compression motor. It makes for a lot of tension on the belt. But to answer your question, it is entirely possible to do, and not very difficult if you know how to install the new steering rack, and your way around a Fox.

Thanks alot for the advise.I think I will end up keeping the power steering then. But I am kind of confused I can just move the power steering pump up to the a/c spot and get red of the smog and a/c pumps? And all ill have to purchase is a 71.5" belt. Thanks again for the help.

yea...actually its a 71.6" belt if its the "Gates" brand. (at o'rileys auto parts) for the a/c delete go to this link http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...T1=M8511A50+01 and its about 40 bucks for the kit and what it does is replace the big braket your a/c is bolted to and allows you to move the powr steering up a bit higher so the belt wont rub. and here is the way to route the new belt... go to this link http://www.cjponyparts.com/NewTech50Belts.aspx and the box with the routing titled "bypassing smog pump and p/s and keeping the a/c in place" (top right box") pay no attention to the listed belt size and title tho...its a typo but the picture shows how you should route it with the 71.6" belt. hope it helps...i just did the same conversion a month ago but i had to go to the store 7 times to get the right belt..lol good luck

You can move the power steering. I think you will be disapointed if you eliminate it completely. The gains aren't worth the time, money or aggrevation. At least not in my oppinion. Like I said before, I know someone with the exact same thing you wanted to do, and I've driven the car too. Manual steer doesn't make for the best daily driver.
