Is my clutch slipping in 1st only?
Well, To start off I have a 1986 Mustang GT 5.0 5spd. Some of you may have read my thread about my car losing torque, but today I noticed something else that could be an issue. While I was pulling out of my neighborhood the street kinda changes angles, I was bored so I got on it and once the tires kinda came up a little and lost traction, the car took off like a bat outa hell like it's supposed to. However, about 2 min later, I wanted to see if it would do the same thing. So I turned right at a stop sign and once I was straight and comfy on the road, I punched it from about 7mph or so. The car revved and accelerated, but no traction loss(strange on some generic 235 tires) and I noticed that it sorta revved faster then it accelerated. I remember reading a while back that to test the clutch you should go into 5th at about 45mph and punch it. So I did this and the car just kinda gurgled along and accelerated like you would expect it to in 5th at that speed. No clucth slip or independent engine revving. Is it possible that the cluctch could only slip under a first gear load? Also, on a side note, what does a misfire feel like in these cars?[/align]

I'd be surprised if the clutch slipped in only first gear. Like you mentioned it usually happens more the higher gear you get into. Try takin it out in like 4th gear or so and rev it up and dump it and see if it bogs or if the RPMs stay up.
As for the misfire, kinda feels like the engine has a hickup, slightly rough idle. I noticed mine when the engine was under a slight load, IE going up a hill in 4th gear.

I bet it is your clutch. When you do the 5th gear 45mph test, your engine may not be making as much torque at that particular rpm. Wind the car out in 4th gear and see if it slips. But if the problem persists definately get a clutch, its worth the money/time.

ckyguy68, thats the only logical reason I could come up with. I'ma try the 4th gear stuff tonight. Anyone gota ballpark figure on what most shops charge for a clutch job if I just get a stock spec replacement?
On the sidenote, I think my engine misses right at 1900rpm's with no load, just cruisn. Not all the time either. What are some of the 100's of things that could cause this. lol

Okay, just got back from the testdrive. I'm not exactly sure what you meant to do in 4th gear, but at 45mph, I put it in 4th, revved it, to about 4500rpm, and dumped the clutch, the clutch just caught and the car went. However, 1st got worse. It used to accelerate all the way through 1st. Now it accells till about 35-40mph(stock gears)or so, maybe less, then the engine continues to climb, but no more accel.

Are you sure it's not just the stock 5L choking out at the higher rpms? They hit a wall pretty fast, try doing a burnout in 1st gear, you'll know pretty fast if the clutch is slipping or not.

Thats what I mean, it cant. That car used to lite the tires up all through 1st, it would even lite em up at 3/4 throttle. Now I can't get it to do anything really, even at wot. It feels like the torque is just gettin lost in the clutch slip. I haven't tried revving from a stand still and dumping the clutch, but I don't wanna either seeing as the last time I did that, the tranny didn't like it too much. lol

You must have 2.73? If you dump the clutch at like 2300/3000grand it should break loose? If you take off normal with the cluth all the way out (moving) and then punch it it might not spin if it has 2.73...

I'm not sure if it has 2.73's or 3.08's but I know it has factory gears. Either way, as i've said, I used to be able to roll along in 1st, punch it, and it would break em loose reguardless. It's only on some little generic 235's so it's not super hard to break traction. I have an aluminum quadrant with a firewall adjuster. I thought at first it was too tight and causing the clutch to hold open, but I checked and made sure it wasn't.
