Need help...clutch/tranny/gear advice needed
Hey all,
Im new to this and stumbled upon it searching through the internet trying to find out information regarding a clutch and tranny. I recently blew out the tranny and clutch on my 95 GT (manual trans) and now Im at the point of trying to figure out what would be the best thing for me to do...buy new or rebuild in order to get it back on the road. I was wondering what you all thought....I have been told by a close mechanic friend that he can rebuild it for 550, but Ive also heard that rebuilding them T-5's is like pissing in the wind....so Im not sure if I should go with a different tranny likea TKO or something. If so, will it require a lot of extra work to make it all come together correctly??? Also, Im not really sure what kind of clutch I should go with. Im thinking a stage 2, since I havent really done anything to the engine (just bolt ons), but dont really know what would be the best one to get. I thought about a king cobra clutch, but dont know if them are good or not????Lastly, Im confused on whether to go with 3:55 gears or 3:73 gears. I want to get the most out of themwithout losing my top end. I was told go with 3:73 for the overall best of both worlds (good low end gain w/o losing top end), but then I heard some pple say go with 3:55's. So what is the difference and what would be the best thing to do??? I want it to be worth my while if im going to do it since the whole drivetrain is pretty much in pieces...so any other suggestions are more than welcome. Im not really looking to make it a race car just yet, just maybe slightly modified because Im strapped for cash and cant afford at the time to make it into one. Thanks all! Look forward to hearing what you have to say.

whoever told you that rebuilding the T5 is worthless, needs to get their head checked...
I am STILL running my stock T5, and its behind a 347CI stroker
I refused to change it out until it DOES break (AAA Gold membership FTMFW)
Spend the $550, get your rebuilt OR buy the G-force or Astro-performance upgrade kits and go from there... and since you are mostly stock, you dont need a super heavy duty clutch. A Spec Stage 1 would suit you fine, However, if you plan on modding the car into the 300-400 hp area. Get a Spec Stage 2

Hey thanks AdderMk2 for the information....especially regarding the rebuilding of the transmission. Thats why I wanted to see what others thought because for the most part had heard about pple just rebuilding them. Also thanks regarding the clutch info too. What you think about gears though....Im gonna change them for sure, just not sure what would be my best bet???

If your not sure of your long range plans, I might suggest you take a look at the Ford Racing T-5 that Summit Sells. My stock tranny went out. Got a quote of $500 plus for rebuild. I elected to go with the Summit Tranny at a 2006 price of $1150. I like the ratio's in that unit better than the stock T-5. I onlyrun a stock 5.0, so this option may not impress you, but the Summit tranny also will handle up to something in the range of 300-350 ft-lbs of torque. So if you think you may go with a super charger for cheap horsepower in the future, that tranny will handle it. Good luck with your decision. Just my experience.

That Ford racing trans is not going to be a direct fit. You can get a better quality (than original) t-5 for cheaper at texas motorsports.(http://www.txmotorsports.com/?pg=8&pm=13&pc=24 ) It is made for the 94-95 and you can get an upgraded one for under 1k$. It uses G force internals. I have the HP series and i matched it with a Centerforce dual friction clutch an aluminum drive shaft, a steel flywheel from ford racing and an MGW shifter. I also have the 3.73s from FRPP. I love the setup
