Check your front wheel bearings.
Check your ring and pinion and bearings and your spider gears. Axle splines wear too, but would give you a clunk when getting on and off the gas.

the wear thing is that the clunk stops when the car is under load, even the slightest amount of throttle stops the clunking.

any ideas of what the problem is? or how to narrow down what it is?
Hey i am having the same problem ! has anybody figured out what exactly it is yet?

If this happens consistently every time you decelerate, can you replicate the condition while turning the wheels manually with the car on jack stands?

If you can get it to makes the noise under human power it will be a LOT easier to find.

Ya I'm still having the problem :/ I'm almost sure its not wheel bearings because I had it on a jack stand and rotated both front wheels....... no noise, only when I'm slowing down I really think its the u joints I'm just going to drop the drive shaft and replace the whole thing iv wanted to replace it with an auminum one for a while this just gives me a excuse to finnaly do it. Haha any sujestions for brand ?

Since this thread is back i'll post some things I have run into over the years that have caused similar noises.

u-joints worn or incorrect ones installed, bad trans mount causing front of driveshaft to rub the tunnel on the floor, Wheel weights on inner edge of front wheels rubbing front calipers, and most recently just this week on the 84 I picked up all four bolts holding the drive shaft to the rear diff were loose and backing out.
Glad I caught that one when I did.
