clunk noise while driving
#21
Since this thread is back i'll post some things I have run into over the years that have caused similar noises.
u-joints worn or incorrect ones installed, bad trans mount causing front of driveshaft to rub the tunnel on the floor, Wheel weights on inner edge of front wheels rubbing front calipers, and most recently just this week on the 84 I picked up all four bolts holding the drive shaft to the rear diff were loose and backing out.
Glad I caught that one when I did.

I went to replace the pinion seal and discovered that nut was finger tight!!! I replaced the seal and tightened the yoke down, but ever since then the rear has whined a little... it whines ALOT on down shifts.. Oh well.. Crap-tastic 2.73s are dumpster fodder anyhow!
edit #3 (2 whiskey caused... #3 I forgot): When I reinstalled the nut, I had it dripping with loc-tite red, peened the snot out of 2 sides of it and rolled the threads over just in front of it... She ain't coming off accidentally next time!

that's because you did it wrong, the proper way to replace the seal is install a new crush collar and reset the preload on pinion, otherwise it's just a guess where you set preload, to tight and it'll burn the bearings up, to loose and it'll make noise
