well ill break it down for u what my bill was in december of 07 for my 306 as now i would of gone definetley with a 347 for a couple more 100 bucks or bought a shortblock from fordstrokers anyways here u go

clean,mag,blast block 100
bore and hone with torque plates250
arp rod bolts, resized stock rods 100
hang new pistons, gap new rings 100
turn and polish stock crank 125
deck block, cam brgs., line bore 275
balance new stuff225

then install new v. springs,wash heads 100

so i have about 1300 in all machine work with the stock crank, stock rods and then the price of my new parts in the motor
probe pistons 450
total seal rings 100
clevite 77 brgs 100
arp rod bolts and
mains,heads, 100
ram billet
flywheel 275
prof. products
sfi balancer 150

so u see i would go with a stroker as it is about the same price.[:'(]

A lot!. Shop labor is expensive, andwith the cost of everything going up, I don't blame them. I rebuilt my 300 six a while back, and the machine work alone was over$900 (block, crank and heads). I pressedthe pistons on myself, and assembled the motor myself. In the long run, a short block would have been cheaper. The only good thing about doing it myselfis thesatisfaction that it runs great, and I did it myself, but sometimes pride gets in the way oflogic. My next short block will be from Fordstrokers.com

The only time you should have a machine shop assemble your engine, is when you want it blueprinted.

They tend to have very little time on thier hands.

On the other hand, when they are not busy, maybe a "deal" can be made.

it depends on what you have them do..often times it is quicker and cheaper to just order a short block ready to go and at that maybe a stroker

The machine shop I use charges $65. an hour. Everything and anything will be billed. EX:drill and tap 1/8"npt hole in intake $45. install oil return in oil pan $45....on and on...........
To save some money (around $300.) disassemble the engine your self. This would include removing all freeze plugs, cam bearings, and core/oil galleyplugs.
