Default trans rebuild...

How much is a transmission rebuild from a mechanic, vs. how much it cost to do your self? is it easy to rebuil a transmisson? also it grinds between shifts, but not that bad, whats this mean? that means the trans is going out?

Does it grind in all gears? Or just one or two? If it's grinding in all gears, your clutch cable could be stretched or out of adjustment, or your clutch is worn out. If one or two gears it will need to be rebuilt. I think a rough cost to have rebuilt is like $800-1000, that would be R&R/teardown/inspection/rebuild labor and bearing/syncro kit. I think kits run about $200-300 but not exactly sure. A good quote I heard from an old school rebuilder who refused to rebuild manuals was "Building a manual transmission is like putting together a Swiss watch with a sledge hammer." If you are mechanically inclined and want to learn more about it and live and learn from mistakes, and have the tools, go for it.

I just did mine. It wasn't too hard. I got a rebuild kit from www.thegearbox.com and they supplied a very detailed manual. Mine was grinding in second so I knew the synchro was gone. The cost was $208 plus shipping for the kit. The only other thing that I supplied was silicone for the gasket. You'll need to get some bearings pressed on/off one of the shafts. If you don't have a press you can have that done.

Someone else from this board got a quote from a shop for like $350 or something like that if he removed the trans himself. Do a search...it wasn't too long ago...maybe a month since that was posted.

That was me that got the quote for $360 thats me pulling it and it comes with a 12 month 12k warranty to boot. I haven't done it yet because I have to save money to move in August ( land lord is selling the house). After that its game on... Shop around, the T5 is supposed to be the easiest tranny to rebuild!
