Default fuel gauge

Anybody got any ideas about what would cause a fuel gauge to go all the way up then slowly go back down and then settle all the way at the top and generally act bat **** crazy? Personally I would have to assume wiring, but since that is not my forte, I was hoping there might be other things I can check before doing that. The car is an 87 5.0.

Could be a bad Fuel Level Sending Unit (mounted in the tank). I changed mine a few months ago (it would never read full).I had it tested and it did not meet specs. Now it reads just fine. See link below.

I doubt it's wiring................most likely a bad sending unit that is picking up a ground intermitently...using a decade box or gauge tester will verify this.... that's what I use and never fails to diagnosis the prob
