Default At what point would you change Cams?

I have a 89 Mustang GT Auto bone stock. I'm adding a set of Flowmaster Super 44 mufflers one day this week. Alot of friends have Mustangs (5.0 and 4.6). Some have done alot of mods from basic bolt ons, heads, cams, etc. They keep telling me modify mine which I plan to as $ allows. I have a few questions.

What are the benefits of changing cams?
Do you have to have other mods done before you change cams?
I read MM&FF and I read about cams and driveability and idle. So what kind of cam would you go to if you want good driveability and idle.

Thanks

at least have a good set of heads to go on when swapping cams.. IMO an H/C/I should be done as one mod...done seperately often times you get under achieving and mismatched combos that fail to live up to their said expectations

depends on your budget and goals and if you have an 86 gt that is SD combo will need to be a tad different than a mass air mustang expecially with the type pistons you have in the 86
